Getting your home ready for summer

The sun is out and the days are longer. Spend a couple of hours planning your summer projects and preparing your household for all the activities of the season.

Schedule outdoor projects.
Call a contractor to schedule any exterior projects you hope to accomplish this year such as replacing windows, repairing a deck or painting your siding. Now is also the ideal time to take care of routine maintenance tasks so you’ll be ready for indoor-outdoor living. Install screen doors, organize the garage, clean outdoor furniture, clear out gutters and downspouts, hire a pest control service to spray for bugs, and check the safety of swings and other play equipment.

Consider ways to save energy.
Summertime can easily send your energy bills skyrocketing. If you haven’t done it yet, schedule an appointment to service your HVAC system, and remember to change your air filters regularly.

If your current air conditioning unit isn’t keeping your entire home comfortable, consider adding a ductless mini split system. Similar to traditional window AC units, these modern systems cool one room or zone of the house; however, they’re permanent fixtures that don’t need to be removed during cooler months. Mini splits are efficient and less expensive than installing additional ducting for a central air unit.

Prepare for memory-making.
Summer means family road trips, plenty of swim time and kids with boundless energy. Keep your sanity by designating an out-of-the-way spot for wet towels and swimsuits, and store sunglasses, bug spray and sunscreen in a basket near the door.

Replenish your first-aid kit and emergency supplies by stocking up on adhesive bandages, antibiotic cream, batteries, flashlights, bottled water, and nonperishable food. Before you and your family head out to hike in the mountains or water ski at the lake, take the time to waterproof and repair seasonal gear so you’ll be ready to enjoy any adventure.
